At what point is it more cost effective to buy a forklift truck than to hire a forklift?

Forklift hire usually comes with cover for insurance, maintenance, repairs and spares as standard. The forklift can be delivered to and collected from the exact location at which its going to be working by the forklift hire company, so there are no transportation or storage charges. The forklift hire period ends when the vehicle is returned at which time it no longer costs you a penny.

When you buy a forklift, like any vehicle, its value starts to depreciate the moment it leaves the showroom. If you buy a fork lift you have to factor in the hidden costs of insurance, tax, maintenance, repairs and storage. Of course many forklift sales do come with a warranty during which some or all of these costs are covered for a specified period.

Theres little doubt that, even with the extra costs associated with ownership, over the longer term buying either a new or used forklift will work out significantly cheaper than renting, unless the actual periods when it will be required are few and far between.

Forklift Leasing

For many the most convenient answer may lie in leasing a forklift. The lease agreement fixes costs very transparently, doesn't require the large capital outlay of buying a forklift, and works out a lot cheaper than short term fork lift truck hire rates. If you lease a forklift you'll also avoid the high depreciation costs associated with buying a forklift.
