Forklift Training
Before undertaking forklift truck training it is good practice to check the forklift training provider is accredited by a training organisation recognized by the Health and Safety Commission.
Forklift driver training is not a legal requirement but is extremely advisable. Under the Health and Safety at Work Act (1974) employers have a duty to provide sufficient forklift training and supervision to safeguard the health and safety of their employees.
Forklift truck training courses exist for complete novices who have never driven a fork lift before, those with limited driving experience, and refresher courses for experienced forklift operators.
Fork lift training can be provided off site or in house and generally lasts between one and five days depending upon the level of experience. Forklift training typically comprises health and safety procedures, practical operation and driver assessment.
CITB Construction Skills offer a 5 day course in Rough Terrain Forklift operation working towards the industry recognised Construction Plant Competence Scheme (CPCS) trained operator card. Anyone wanting to drive an all terrain forklift on any major UK construction site would have to be in possession of the CITB's CPCS card. To do so trainees would need to first pass a Health & Safety test and also get an NVQ in Plant Operations (Constructions) Operative Level 2.
