A forklift truck is a purpose built truck designed for lifting and handling heavy materials often on pallets over relatively short distances, especially in warehouses.
Forklift Truck Types
The fork lift truck itself may typically be powered by petrol, diesel or propane gas. Electric powered forklift trucks are ideal for indoor use. The hydraulic lifting forks of a counterbalance lift truck typically have a standard lifting height of up to 20 feet. Forklift trucks with greater reach, known as articulated forklifts, work at heights of up to 40 feet and are ideal for use in factories and warehouses where pallets are stored in multi-level racks.
Counterbalance Forklift Trucks
The standard or counterbalance forklift truck is the most widely used type of forklift. It is versatile and quick with many uses including the loading and unloading of goods from lorries. The articulated or reach forklift truck can typically turn in tighter spaces or aisles with some Narrow Aisle forklifts requiring just 8 feet in which to turn through 360 degrees.
Narrow Aisle Forklift Trucks
Forklift trucks that can turn in tighter spaces allow for greater capacity in warehouses. Those vehicles that can turn in aisles as narrow as 6 feet are known as very narrow aisle forklifts. Narrow Aisle forklift trucks often employ optical or wire guidance to keep them in the centre of the aisle whilst the forks themselves are mounted at right angles to the forklift truck to reduce the need for turning.
All-Terrain Forklift Trucks
Nowadays its commonplace to find much larger all-terrain forklift trucks working outside for example on construction sites or timber yards. These versatile, rugged high-power forklifts have massive solid rubber tyres and can lift super heavy loads of up to 50 tonnes.
